Top 10 Things to do in Austin City over the Holiday Period

Uncategorized

(Pic Austin.com)

This will be my first time in Austin for Christmas as we wont be returning to Ireland for the holiday season. As much as I am slightly disappointed we won’t be home for Christmas I’m as equally excited to be spend Christmas stateside…already the anticipation of whats to come is building!

So after asking lots of local friends & colleagues not to mention doing a little research here is the top 10 things to do over the holiday Period!

  • I’m told it best to kick-start the Christmas season at the Downtown Austin Alliance’s Holiday Stroll on Saturday, December 1 along Congress Avenue between 9th and 11th streets. Congress avenue is pretty amazing and the Capital Building stands tall…which that alone is impressive on any given day! From 5:00 to 10:00 pm it will be nothing but holiday cheer in downtown Austin, where you re guaranteed a  Holiday Sing-Along and the lighting of the downtown tree.  Most events over the Christmas here in Austin are free, as is this, event and very family-friendly. I’m told Holiday Stroll has something for everyone including photos with Santa, a petting zoo, live ice sculpture, holiday arts & crafts, a live mural painting, local food trucks, artisan vendors, and more. And as always Austin city is all about the music so there will be a full night of live music with performances by the Austin Children’s ChoirGirlFriend ATXShy Beast, and many others. After the annual lighting of the tree at the Holiday Sing-along on December 3, the Capitol Christmas Tree will be on display nightly through January 3, 2017. Catch all the information here http://www.downtownaustin.com/holidaystroll.

  • Up next is one I’m really looking forward to, and again its a free event. This is the Austin Trail of lights. With a whooping 40 displays, 2 million lights, Austin’s favorite food trucks, nightly entertainment and holiday activities its known to be the highlight of the holiday season. It runs a total of 15 days and is open to the public. There’s even a 2.5 mile run to kick the event off that’s if your feeling energetic! Kids friendly and definitely one we’re not going to miss this year.

  • Zilker holiday Tree, again this event is very close to the Trail of lights, on November 25th it is the lightning festival of the Zilker tree. The Zilker Tree stands 155 feet tall and is composed of 39 streamers, each holding 81 multicolored, 25-watt bulbs – totaling 3,309 lights. At the top of the tree, a double star measures 10 feet from point to point. On the night you can expect live music and entertainment, food and novelties…this is another event that runs throughout the month of December. We went to this the other night and it was fabulous, we booked early and it was so worth it to get in the hour before the large crowds, you could see the displays without being blocked with crowds of people, the rides on the carousel and wheel were less crowded too…it is such a magical experience and the kids will love it.

  •  North Pole Flyer, this is a unique way to visit Santa…visions of my favourite Christmas Movie “The Polar express” comes to mind..Its a 2 hour excursion on a real train featuring a visit from Santa and Mrs. Claus, all-you-can-drink hot cocoa and a locally baked holiday cookie. Each car is decorated for the season where passengers enjoy a live reading of the North Pole Flyer book-the railroad’s own Christmas Story! Santa is known  to spend time in each carriage to “check your list twice”, and pose for photographs before handing out a gift to each child to remember this special ride! https://www.austinsteamtrain.org/special-events/north-pole-flyer/

  • Winter wonderland held at Circuit of the Americas (Home to Formula 1) Running from the 8th up until 30th of December, this year will feature World Famous Chinese Lantern Festival, a display of illuminated sculptures – each hand-crafted using a tradition that extends back centuries. The lanterns are created using steel frames surrounded by colorful rayon “skins” and illuminated from within by LED lights. I’m informed they will have Texas’ largest outdoor Ice Skating Rink (which could be dangerous :0) ), A Tunnel of Lights, Trips to the top of the North Pole, Carnival Rides, Camel Rides, Singing Trees, a Petting Zoo, oh and most importantly Santa’s Workshop. And being Austin there’s a Live Music Stage! There’s also a Human snow globe which I’m intrigued about and Holiday movies on the lawn…sounds perfect!!! More details http://www.circuitoftheamericas.com/blog/2017/11/14/winter-wonderland-lights-up-cota-all-december

  • Would it really be Christmas if there wasn’t a trip to the theater? And what better place to go but to a Ballet performance! From the scrumptious sets and costumes to all of the colorful characters you love, Ballet Austin’s The Nutcracker is the longest-running production of the seasonal classic in Texas. Stephen Mills’ take on this timeless tale features a cast of hundreds of dancers, including the charming and talented students from the prestigious Ballet Austin Academy who share the spotlight with our professional company of artists. Celebrate the magic of the holidays by experiencing this sweet treat with your family and friends. Featuring live accompaniment by Austin Symphony Orchestra. It runs from the 8th until the 23rd of December.

  • Zach Theater based here in Austin are reknowned for their shows and they have not one but three shows running over the Christmas Holiday period, The traditional “A Christmas Carol”  (Nov 21 to Dec 30th) Its Austin’s most rockin’ holiday tradition and it returns to make merry with new music and surprises to get the party started. ZACH’s inspired adaptation of the Dickens’ classic is a musical sleigh ride through rhythm and time, infusing the traditional Victorian story with a score that spans all genres and eras. Motown meets the Ho-Ho-Holidays in this family-friendly spectacular, creating an infectious spirit that has everyone dancing in the aisles. Celebrate the season with the loving Cratchit family and three soulful ghosts as they take Ebenezer Scrooge on a joyride to rediscover his heart and love for human kindness. This is for all the family from ages 6 and up… they also have a show for younger kids from 3 years and up called “Holiday Heros” which is more fun with Holiday sing alongs. This runs from the 8th until the 15th of December at 11am and runs just 45mins with no intervals (so the time is more suited for the smallies). Another for the bit of adult humor, they have The Santaland diaries (ages 12 and up) running from 5th until the 30th of December, apparently ever-irreverent and cynical Crumpet is back! The outlandish tale of a Macy’s elf merrily jingles to life in the intimate Whisenhunt at ZACH Theatre. In this holiday cult-classic, Crumpet sarcastically expounds on the talent it takes to juggle tinsel, tearful tots, and not-so-sober Santa’s during what is hailed as the most wonderful time of the year. 75 minutes of rollicking (and not so politically-correct) fun, this laugh-‘til-you-spill-your-cocktail evening will delight adult elves who like it more naughty than nice! It runs from the 5th til the 30th of December and you’ll find all details of the shows here https://tickets.zachtheatre.org/single/EventListing.aspx

  • Mozarts Holiday Light Show, Mozart’s is one of the best coffee shops in Austin, mostly because they have a phenomenal location on Lake Austin and a great outdoor deck. It’s one of the best places in town to see some spectacular holiday lights. Each year they take Christmas lights to the extreme with an extravagant display. They decorate the deck with over 1 million LED lights and set up a show to everyones favorite holiday tunes. Admission is free and there is no assigned seating, so you can bring the whole crew and enjoy! They have a light show at the top of each hour starting at 6 p.m. Runs from November until end of December http://mozartscoffee.com/christmas-lights-show/ We did this the other night and it was fabulous..the display happens every 15mins so not too much crowds and the coffee is to die for!! Free admission and free parking across from the coffee shop!! Win win!

  • Georgetown’s Annual Christmas Stroll. The historic downtown Georgetown, Texas which is just a suburb of Austin hosts its 38th Annual Stroll (This town alone on any given day is beautiful) The festivities begin from Friday 30th November until Dec 1st with a christmas parade, santa visit and ice skating. They will also have a swing carousel and the younger ones can tackle a candyland obstacle course!!! What the Georgetown annual christmas stroll is most famous for is the re enactment of life 2000 years ago in Bethlehem Villlage and they have a live manager on display!! You can find all the details here http://www.downtowngeorgetownassociationtx.org/Christmas-Stroll—Guests.html
  • The Thinkery Gingerbread Workshops, the tinkery is Austins Children museum, its an amazing place to take kids, we go there almost always once a month, this year they are hosting Gingerbread workshops, Creative families build with fresh gingerbread and sweet treats in a fun and festive atmosphere you can find more information on this here https://thinkeryaustin.org/gingerbread

Plenty to see and do over the holiday period, to get you into the Christmas spirit!

So far we ‘re ticking of the boxes slowly but surely 🙂

Oldie but Goodie

Oldie but goodie…

I got this jumpsuit before summer began and just before I went back to Ireland..I picked it up at Norstrom. Its by a brand called 1901 which is slowly becoming a favourite of mine for certain pieces. I’m beginning to discover new brands since moving stateside and these are definitely a nice label.

Its been worn to on many occasions in the last few months that I’ve lost count…the beauty is I can still wear it here in Austin in this heat! Its so comfortable as its made mainly of cotton and its so breathable even after loads of food! Unfortunately its now sold out, but I’ve linked some of my favourite jumpsuits around at the moment down below.

I love a good jumpsuit and here are some of my favourite ones around at the moment.  They last forever and never go out of fashion. Jumpsuits are a great alternative to  a dress. You can buy ones for nights out or wear with trainers or carry you through most seasons.

The heels are from Dunnes Stores, and the earrings from the jewel genie, which i adore!

Here’s a few of my top Jumpsuits around at the moment. This one from JCrew I’ve been lusting after but its more than id like to spend find it here ..this white beauty from River Island here , this casual one right here from Zara. I’m loving this from Asos too and this new look one is so cool check it out here

Until next time

I love Austin

FashionMy Style

I love Austin yes I do, I’m packed up to head home for the summer holidays..we get the best of both worlds this summer. It feels like since moving here to Austin its been one long holiday. The weather has been so nice, warm sunny and humid at times but such a luxury compared to the weather in Ireland. I can tell you I’m not looking forward to going home to a colder perhaps wetter country but I am looking forward to seeing all my family and friends. We are so lucky we can head home for a good few weeks and my girls are so lucky not to be missing out on Irish Summers with Cousins.

We’ll always have guaranteed hot weather when we get back here so we re looking forward to a bit of rain and cold ..our Austin friends are telling us we are so lucky leaving here during summer as Austin can get incredibly hot….I was melting at 29 degrees and this week was up to 37 degrees but my Texas friends were constantly laughing at me anytime I mentioned “it was hot” and have told me it gets worse!!…I know a few of them are tempted to jump into my suitcase to escape it…

So  with my looming trip home, with this look today on the blog I’m layering up as that’s exactly what ill be doing at home in Ireland. We’ve a trip planned to Spain amid our time at home so I’ll need some summer gear too…Above I’m wearing a floral bomber I got at Michael Kors Outlet for less than $70 but you can get similar here, there is some of these jackets left in store. I have found similar jackets here and here

The shorts again I picked up at the outlets (sorry girls) they are j.crew and so so comfy..I paid about $15 and you can find similar here from Vero moda and here from Mango. The white tshirt is from Dunnes stores last year. My necklace is from The temple wolf here and I love it!! (A piece of home!)

The shoes are new look but old but they usually bring similar out every year like this pair here.

So bags are packed and we’re excited to be getting home for a while…I have been warned though to turn on my heat to full blast before I get back to Austin in August 🙂

Hope you liked the look and thanks to my fab Austin Friend Abby who you will be seeing more of on this page once I get back after the summer!!

Until next time y’all

Jumpsuit …Tickled pink with a bit grey

FashionMy Style

Jumpuits…since moving here I’ve picked up a lot of these type of jumpsuits. When you’re up as early as we are in the mornings, and the brain isn’t quiet functioning, these jumpsuits are just perfect to throw on. I have a few like this hanging in the wardrobe, and I tend to wear them for casual and dressy wear. They suit most occasions which is another reason why I tend to keep buying them.

This one I picked up from Target here in the states, for any of my US followers you’ll find it here.  I like this as the material is linen and very breathable in the heat we get here in Austin, even if it creases a little (Although the creases are not that obvious) I love the detailing on these and the frill adds a little to it.

This jumpsuit has cut out sides which at first I was a bit apprehensive about but you wouldn’t even notice it.

I’ve searched and found similar strip jumpsuits here from Miss Selfridges, although not exact same still very pretty. Also Warehouse have a fab striped one too  which you’ll find here.

These flats are from Target and you’ll find them in store…there is similar in Oasis for my irish followers and you ll find them here for 34 euro.

Again I love these murals around downtown austin, they make great backgrounds 🙂

If you have any questions on the outfit just let me know

The Handy Coat for throwing on over the christmas season

FashionMy Style

The handy coat for throwing on over the christmas season is one I picked up in Penneys of all places..

Its a good colour albeit its not that warm but that’s ok as I intend on wearing it thrown over outfits.

Its not the warmest of coats but at €40 it looks the part for evening time…I’m forever leaving my coat behind somewhere when I go out for dinner or drinks, as its so easy to leave them behind (nothing worse than leaving an expensive coat behind in a restaurant/bar never to be found again so this coat is perfect just to have!!). My intention when buying this, was solely for wearing going out for dinner or Christmas drinks…

Checked Trousers

The other reason for choosing this Coat was it ll be perfect for the spring too when the weather is a lot less colder so I can transition to spring/summer…

Penneys coat

Its a great colour as it goes with everything, I paired it with the checked trousers and black jumper but goes really well with grey colours too. In the spring I will wear it with blue jeans and pumped. The Grey culottes here are from a previous post, picked them up from Born Clothing and the boat neck jumper was penneys last year but you’ll find similar in penneys at the moment for €14.

Lost ink Culottes

I particular love the shape and lenght of this coat. It can be worn with dresses as it sits just at the knee and has subtle side splits. I also love that its belted. Its shape is almost bat winged on the shoulder sleeves area which makes it slightly over sized on top but fitted on the bottom. It is rather chic.

Now as I said its not that warm so you’d need to layer it up if you intend on buying it for every day wear, although in my opinion if its an every day winter coat you are looking for this isn’t going to keep you warm and you are better off investing in better quality.

I’m all for buying a good winter coat and spending a lot more than €40 for a good one. But as I said this is worth buying if you are looking to just have something to throw on over your outfit for a night out  or a light coat for Spring!!

Hope you enjoyed this

Until next time

Body suits…the classy style

FashionMy Style

Bodysuits love them or hate them they can be so ideal under certain trousers or skirts…I remember years ago I got a shirt version from benneton and loved it. I wore it to work with trousers and it was ideal as it didnt fall out over your trousers by the end of the day..so you get my drift why they are so handy, no tucking or pulling at your top or shirt as it sits in place….

When I saw this bodysuit from Zara I know it would go with everything , its such a nice fit and has a satin feel (its not satin though its polyester)

As you can see from above, bodysuits wont budge when you’re sitting down and are so comfy, I love the large lapels on this one, the v neck is great for larger busts. If you are self conscious of it gapping you can also throw on a cami underneath (I have done this before and its still looks perfect). With bodysuits they tend to sit in place and hold everything together. This top has shoulder pads too which suits my shape but fear not they are removable!

These trousers I picked up in Born Clothing, they are by a label called Lost ink, who design pieces that are a little bit quirky. These wool culottes are my current favourite thing in the wardrobe and they go with numerous tops and jumpers. They were a great buy and really warm for this type of weather. You will find them available in Born Clothing in wilton so maybe check with them, they were great value at €54.99 but unfortunately and unsurprising they are sold out online.

These earrings girls were an absolute bargain …I bought them on aliexpress for €2.95 and I love them, that included delivery by the way!! You will find loads of fab pieces and you’ll find the exact pair above here.

So if you are apprehensive about buying a bodysuit dont be ladies as they are quiet comfy (even though its more time consuming in the bathroom!!) but they are nice and neat tucked into skirts or trousers and you wont have the fear of having to fix yourself all night!

Hope you enjoyed…

Until next time

Love

Winter warmer!

FashionMy Style

Winter warmers and what springs to mind is nice bulky coats..who doesn’t love a good coat for winter?

Now I’ve packed away all the summer clothes up into the attic, I’ve reassessed the wardrobe, and yes it needs more coats!! I think living in Ireland a coat is “a must” piece to invest in, as we live in them over the winter…

Throw it on dashing to meetings or in my case dashing to and from school gates!! For those of you who know me, there’s nothing I love more than a statement coat…I’ve always been drawn to the oversized ones, those cool edgy long ones, but with my petite frame, an midget height, I’ve never quiet found what I was looking for….that is, until I popped into Hickeys Fashion Fermoy. I spotted this beaut hanging up and was immediately drawn to it, again I have collaborated with them on this post to show you this beauty in detail!!

As I mentioned in a previous post Hickeys have introduced new labels to their floor, and this piece is by one of the newer labels Lost Ink. It’s a beautiful coat and the wool feels amazing. I love the fact it is a tie coat, there is no buttons on it, and to be honest there is none needed as it wrapped around the body so well and so warm!

Its the type of coat you would throw on, with a dress for a night out or pair it with jeans as I have done here…for an edgier look and if I was blessed with height I would be pairing converse/trainers with it!

I love the lenght of this coat too …Long but not too long that its catching around your ankles. I paired this with a fab white blouse which buttons at the back, it sits lovely on the front too, a nice top for work to night out, or for any occasion for that matter. Those bell sleeves are beautiful!

As I said Hickeys Fashion Fermoy have some gorgeous affordable labels to suit any fashionistas purse, this coat is retailing at €149 and I swear as coats go, its pretty amazing and not expensive considering what you’d pay for a good winter coat.

You should definitely pop into the girls in Hickeys they are incredibly helpful and honest. Their new collections are to die for and you will not be disappointed, for more information just pop over to their facebook page in the link above or better still just give the girls a buzz  025 31454, as they would only be too happy to help and post nationwide!!

Hope you enjoy this post and don’t forget to invest in a good coat for the winter girls… looks like we’ll be needing it!!

Until next time

A Skirt with sass!!

FashionMy Style

Hey hey hey..I’m back..finally says you!! I did write a post previously to this, just to explain that I had taken time off to spend quality time with family…

But now I’m back and even though I’ve been in denial about summer ending I am embracing the autumn transition period!!

I always love things that are a little bit different or edgy…..sometimes I can’t quiet pull off some of the looks that I imagine in my head but this skirt is most definitely one anyone can pull off!!

When I spotted this in Hickeys Fashion Fermoy I fell in love. I’m a huge fan of Hickeys and was delighted to collaborate with them on this post.

I’m always on the lookout for a skirt that you can wear during the autumn but easily carry it through to the winter months…this skirt is perfect for this purpose. The scuba material makes it warm and cosy but perfect for bearing your legs. And come the winter months just pop on the reliable black tights!

And how fab is this leather jacket another gem from Hickeys fermoy…its a french connection leather jacket and I love the soft leather on it…the waterfall look is perfect for throwing over these type of skirts and is always that little bit more dressy.

The top underneath is a body suit again perfect for this skirt…and its french connection from Hickeys.

Hickeys also have a matching top available with this skirt and it too is divine and looks gorgeous together. Pair it with a black ankle boots…

I also tried this with a black fitted jumper and it looked great. Even though the skirt is dressy its still easily wear it with different types of tops for a completely different look.

In fact Hickeys have some gorgeous pieces in at the moment to suit all ages, they are doing some gorgeous kirky labels and this is a new label to the boutique…my advise is definitely pop over their facebook page for more looks. (Or of you are a local pop in!) They also take orders over the phone and deliver nationwide. For more information on the above looks contact them on 025 31454 or  here.

Hope you enjoyed this post and expect more of these looks to follow

Until next time

Planning ahead for “Back to School with Marks and Spencer”

ChildrenswearFashion

Marks and Spencer Back to School, dare I say it and we near the ending of a school year …

Marks and Spencer School Bag

So when  Marks and Spencer got in contact and asked would I team up and collaborate with them for “Back to school”, it was an absolute resounding “Yes” for me. Lessons learned and as a virgin to big school this time last year, I am armed with knowledge for the new school year looming ahead. One thing’s for sure I promised myself I was going to be more organised this time round.

Pinafore

Now I know you may think I’m crazy when the end of school is only weeks away, but the realization that hit me last year is, the summer months quickly become very short when you have little ones in big school.  Plus did I mention the fact we are heading away for a good bit of the summer period in the next few weeks?  I vowed to be organised before we leave for our trip. Before Marks and Spencer contacted me, I had already bought my little one’s uniforms from them last year. My sister who has 2 kids already in big school advised me to purchase the Marks and Spencer school uniform, as they were the best quality and hard wearing uniforms around. I can vouch for them and their exceptional quality. My little one is not your typical girly girl, a tomboy at heart who tears around playgrounds, spills actual contents of food on her clothes, and I actually considered investing in knee pads with all the holes she’s put in tights/tracksuit bottoms you name it! Marks and Spencer’s uniform have withstood all of my young ones antics and countless washes.

Cotton Cardigan

This time round I am wiser as to what I’d order for my sometimes fussy 6 year old..she doesn’t like dresses but has a huge fondness for the Pinafores and chose them over a skirts..with skirts she tends to tug at them constantly. I went with this one here from Marks and Spencer, as I purchased the same one last year and they are excellent quality. It is still perfect a year on …did I mention my little lady is not the cleanest!

School Uniform

I have what you call a little lady who is constantly roasting in any type of weather conditions and at every opportunity discards coats/jumpers/socks as much as she can. Hence why I went with this Cotton Rich Cardigan as its easy to take off for those scenarios of being too hot. I also went with these Cotton Unisex jumpers, as they are nice and light but still great quality.

The beauty about all Marks and Spencer shirts are they are Easy to Iron (they also come in a 3 pack  which is excellent value!) see here. And as my lady is always hot I got the short sleeve blouse  too. Short sleeves are great especially at the beginning of September and the last term of school as the weather is always that bit milder.

Winter Coat
Winter Coat

I picked up this  Mulberry Longline Coat , it is beautiful with stormwear technology, and water resistant. It is also Machine washable now who can argue with that?

Shoes
Marks and Spencer Patent shoes

These School shoes are so handy with the riptape, making it easy for my little lady to slip them on & off..She has such a habit of constantly whipping off her shoes at any given opportunity! They also have Freshfeet technology which help keep her feet fresh and avoid any unwanted odour! And did I mention scuff resistant, I have been searching for a shoe like this so I’ll keep you posted on how my lady fairs out on that one.

Tracksuit Bottoms
Joggers

Although we do have a school tracksuit uniform I found this year my little one tore holes in the knees on hers, don’t even ask so when I saw these 2 pack  Marks and Spencer Joggers they were straight in the basket. They are a great shape on my little lady even though they are unisex.

Slip on trainers
Trainers

As I mentioned my 6 yr old scuffs any shoe she has ever owned, I swear she does it on purpose sometimes..so hence I picked up two pairs of trainers just in case 🙂 ..Both are pretty but not too girly as my lady isn’t a girly girl ..these Butterfly Print trainers and Riptape trainers (In the pic above this one) are perfect, plus she can wear with her pinafore too!

Marks and Spencer Bag and matching lunch bag

This year we got her a bag that was lovely and pretty but being first timers with our first born starting school we omitted the practicality of “said” bag. When ordering this time round I made sure it was more practical and a good size for her work books to easily fit in, without getting damaged. This one is perfect, unfortunately its sold out online but available in stores, they have other great bag options here, we got the Lunch bag to go with it. She loves them!

So as we head away from the end of a school year I’m ready for the holidays to begin as is the little lady. I’m also secretly delighted that I’m a little bit more together and organised for the school year this coming September. And with 20% off school uniforms you might as well get organised now , so as you can relax and enjoy the carefree (perhaps chaotic at times) summer weeks that lie ahead!

Hope you find this post helpful and useful.

Until next time

Pam
